SUMMER SHRIMP SALAD

Last week I brought some fresh shrimp over to my friends Josh and Gino's house for an early supper. They whipped up this great shrimp salad using finely chopped celery, onions, and dill. They cooked the onions and celery for a few minutes in a pan, added dill, spices and shrimp. They then placed the shrimp atop a bed of mixed greens that were tossed in a creole tomato dressing. Voila!

MEN LOVE BRICKS. THIS GIRL LOVES WHITE BRICKS

Finally! We hired someone to paint the bricks in the new gallery space and they didn't show up. With everything already taped up and secure for the painters, we decided to go ahead and paint it ourselves (thank you Eileen!). With one handy paint sprayer and two masks we got busy. We even sprayed the beams. It is sooo much brighter and the art looks amazing against the white. Many said I shouldn't paint it but now I know I did the right thing. Whew! Glad that's done...now onto painting more bricks outside! Come visit!

MEET ZIPPY

A few months ago, I agreed to foster a small Long-Haired Daschund for my Mother. She works tirelessly as an animal rescuer for an animal shelter in North Louisiana. After having success fostering and finding a home for a wire-haired Jack Russell Terrier, I thought I was really getting good at the foster home angle. Little did I know, that Zippy would steal my heart. So now I have three dogs. It's a bit much but I couldn't trade any of them for anything. And now I have a shopkeep! If anyone is interested in a dog like Zippy let me know. There are twenty small dogs that were rescued this week from a hoarder and they are all in need of love and homes. Homeless adopted animals make wonderful companions and they will be eternally grateful!

NEW DIGS!

Last Friday, I officially became the owner of beautiful building on Magazine Street!! It is an 1840's building that was the site of the first Federal Pharmacy. It's all brick and beautiful. I have my studio and showroom downstairs with a courtyard and warehouse and my apartment upstairs with a wraparound balcony. This is one of the main reasons I've been neglecting the blog. Trying to move, getting set-up, and closing on the property took priority over everything else. Now I can resurface! Please stop by and see the new space-it's at 1382 Magazine Street, on the corner of Magazine and Terpsichore. (four blocks uptown from the interstate) I love my new neighborhood and my new neighbors! There's even a really great coffee shop across the street called the Corner Muse. I feel so lucky and so excited!

PEACHES RECORDS

This weekend I made a trip down to the French Quarter to buy a record player. I had met Kent (the owner) the afternoon before at the Chart Room and was excited to know he would be there the next day. Peaches Records has been in his family for years and is the place to go for records here in New Orleans. The Ion player that I bought can hook up to your computer so you can preserve your records and share them with friends. I picked up a great Lou Rawls album, some Earth Wind and Fire, and some Hall and Oates. Most new albums are coming out on vinyl too which is so fun! Definitely worth a trip, and ask for Kent!

INSPIRATIONS

I walked down to Bush Antiques the other day to bite the bullet and buy a French three-quarters daybed that had been haunting me. I started to talking to the very talented Andy from the shop and he asked me when I was going to update my blog. I was thinking the same thing and I promised I would post soon. When I walked into the shop, I found my post. Andy had just completed the top vignette and the colors and compostition were so beautiful. LARA MATTHEWS and ORBITAL EMPATHY

I wanted to share some information about Lara Matthews and her intuitive abilities. Lara is a very open and amazing person that has the ability to see into the lives of others with stunning accuracy. I was introduced to Lara through a college friend and spoke to her last week. My reading was so helpful and reassuring that I felt completely at ease and it gave me some much needed insight. I thought it would be interesting to ask Lara a few questions about her unique profession and she graciously obliged.

1. When you a performing a reading, do you see more images or are you presented with words or sound?

To be honest every reading is unique and I will sometimes see more images with one client, and hear words more with others. It is not unusual for me to also smell certain scents during readings.

2. Do you find that sharing your skill refines it or is that skill always present regardless of use?

I have heard people say that if you don't 'use it, you lose it' I guess in some respects that might be true although from a small child I 'heard' and 'saw' things. No matter how much I tried to block out these images, sounds and intuitive 'feelings' the clear messages never went away. Later in life I learnt how to make sense of these messages and to work with them, which led me to the rewarding occupation I have today.

3. Could you explain a little bit about our spirit guides?

They are certainly an interesting 'bunch'. I have 9 guides who choose to work with me - 6 Gentlemen and 3 ladies. They seem to work together in groups of 3, and have quite unique characters although as a group they seem to offer information from 3 different perspectives. When I am reading for a client, usually one particular group will assist me depending on the situation and questions I am looking into. There is no general rule of thumb as to how information come to me. Sometimes my guides will assist me solely, and on other occasions I have a mixture of pictures, intuitive knowledge and Spirit Guide Messages.

Everyone seems to want to know their names, and I have often asked my Spirit Guides what they would like to be called but I am told continually "It matters not what you choose to call us - the information we impart is of greater importance'. I like to refer to them as "The Ladies that do" (I perceive this group as 3 maiden Aunt like ladies who hint responses at the gentler questions) "The learnéd Gents (These guys will stand no messing about and would rather respond to answers of an intellectual, Political or educational nature) and 'The Guys' - 3 more down to earth characters who are a little more free and easy with their language. They will 'tell you how it is' on a more mundane level.

4. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would that be?

Right here is good for the moment ;)

5. Do you have clients with recurring set appointments or is it more random when people contact you?

Many of my clients contact me for readings on a monthly basis, some randomly and some even on a yearly basis. I read at Holistic and Psychic Fairs throughout the year and my website attracts quite a few reading enquieries. Word of mouth, however' has always worked well for me.

6. What is your favorite thing about your work/profession?

It is wonderful for me to see people making positive change in their lives. When I read for someone I often tell them how it will be if they choose to do nothing and follow the course of their life as it is, and then show them what could be with a few positive changes. I am happier when I give readings of empowerment, suggesting ways to make positive change and attract more abundance and prosperity. Many people come to me thinking that their destiny is written in stone when in reality our life path is very much what we make it to be. It is possible to change everything in life for the better, and working with people to manifest positive change is the most rewarding part of my job. I am not a healer although I work with energy to effect healing and change - I am merely a facilitator. My clients do all the work. Accompanying them on their own particular journey and holistic metamorphosis is so rewarding, words alone are not sufficient to express my joy and feeling of deep contentment.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Martha Stewart glitter is the best. I have a small obsession to say the least. My friend Rebecca Thomason and Kelly Ransom were kind enough to bring me a pumpkin, a bottle of Vueve Clicquot, a lemon icebox pie, and some roses. I'm quite positive that I didn't deserve any of it but I sure kept it all. They received in return a thank you note and I'm working on a way to repay their spontaneous kindness. Rebecca suggested decorating the pumpkin, which was my first, and I thought it was a perfect time to pull out the glitter and some Elmer's glue. Rebecca is now officially my muse!

LAYERS

So this is a painting that I created for my friend from college Jennifer Myers. She and her husband Greer live in Mobile, Alabama and are about as game for a lively painting as a couple can be. We've been talking about a piece for their house forever and I finally got on the ball and decided it was time. I took some progression shots during its creation to show them how it was made. I think the piece really captures their spirit and positive energy. I can't wait to go visit Jen and Greer to see it in place....and they'll probably fix me dinner!

HUNT SLONEM

The other day, my friend and talented architect, Corbett Scott told me to check out an article in the New York Social Diary on Hunt Slonem's New York studio. I was completely wowed. He has 89 rooms to paint and display his work in....heaven. I have been a longtime admirer of Mr. Slonem's work and I love his use of color and texture. I would love to think my work expresses the same wild and fun sentiment that his paintings evoke. Hunt owns several plantation homes in Louisiana so maybe I'll get the chance to meet him one day and see his other living/studio spaces. I hope you enjoy touring his studio as much as I did.

VERRE EGLOSMISE

My friend and neighbor Mario Villa offered to teach me how to use an ancient painting technique called Verre Eglomise. It's reverse oil painting on glass with a gold or silver leaf backing. We had such a great time during our classes and Mario is a wealth of interesting information. I loved our time together and it's always good when you can multitask! The green piece above is on a 36 inch piece of glass and I had a metal smith make brackets to hold it to a wood backing that makes it easy to hang. Come by the studio and check it out next time you're in the neighborhood.

TWO DAYS IN PARIS

I figured out how to stream movies from Netflix through a Wii! What a difference a day makes! I settled into a favorite movie in the calm cool of the air conditioning. If you haven't seen this one you should watch it and if you've seen it once, you should definitely watch it again. It makes me laugh out loud.

MARTHA STEWART GONE WRONG

I knew I was pretty handy in the kitchen but making a specific shaped giant cake really put my skills to the test. I started to order the specific shaped pan on the internet, when I thought...what would Martha do? She would use what she already had, a 9 x 12 and two 8 inch round baking pans. Perhaps a makeshift tray made of foil and cardboard for that over the top homemade effect..if I had to guess? Well, as we can see, Martha's got nothing on this red velvet cake! The shaved black licorice may be just a little too far over the line but I believe one must commit fully to this sort of endeavor. You truly never know what you are capable of in the kitchen until you just get in there and try!

ALL OF THE ESSENTIALS

It's been a month since I posted and I knew I had to post something to get back into the swing of things. When I was in Baton Rouge a while back, I took some pictures from an old photo album. My, how things have changed! I love my tea party checklist. That was probably circa 1982. Cherrys (sp) and pickels are essential to a fancy tea party! Now my list might look a little like this...vodka, vodka, and cocktail napkins! But a get-up like the one above isn't too far off something I might wear to a party today. Some things such as that sassy attitude don't change.

ELECTRIC PEACHES

I wrote a post about fresh peaches, I drank peaches with vodka and mint, I've almost eaten every last one, and now they have come alive in my painting. It wasn't until I finished the piece and went upstairs to eat a peach that it hit me like a lighting bolt. I went back into the studio and stared in amazement. How on earth could I have not noticed I was painting peaches until after the painting was completed? Pretty unbelievable...And this was a commissioned piece. And it's been raining every day and will continue through the weekend. I can even see the weather's influence in the blueish gray and vertical lines. They gave me a good bit of freedom with color but they did want a bold piece with bold dark lines. I just got an email back from my client and they loved the painting. I can't wait to see what comes out today!

PERHAPS PEACH MOJITOS...

I found the most fragrant peaches today at the farmer's market on Magazine. I've also been dying to get some mint going so I picked up a pot of mint too. Are you thinking what I'm thinking...add rum? I found a video of a chef from Dante's Kitchen making a batch. Overall, I think these would make for a pretty perfect Saturday!

WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE HAVE AN OUTDOOR SCULPTURE?

I turned off of Magazine today onto Jefferson and I saw the most beautiful sculpture by Dr. Arthur Silverman. The bold, modern shape, and color in front of the more traditional neutral home really is stunning. I pulled over and snapped a few pictures. When I got closer I could see the stylish pavers in the front courtyard and their fabulous outdoor furniture. I just love that they made the sculpture the focal point of their front yard. You may have seen a similar piece of his in the back of the new Border's on St. Charles. I love the boldness and strength of his work.

A FEW NEW ADDITIONS

This weekend I attended to an estate sale on Harmony Street. I was going "just for fun" as I am trying to resist being featured on the show Hoarders. Washington here was only $3 and I did get rid of a lot of stuff lately....The abstract mushroom painting (no pun intended) was also a recent acquisition. My friend Christian was selling it it in his art sale. It was a little too rich for my budget but we worked a trade. I had an antique clay whistle collection that he has been in love with for years. So the swap was on! I can see the small abstract from my bed and it makes me very happy. No regrets on the small bust or the painting!

BAR CART

So there I am driving down Magazine Street and I spot this great wrought-iron cart in front of Bush Antiques. I wheel over and find out that the perfect cart was also the perfect price of $285. I wasn't sure exactly what I was going to use it for but of course I just had to have it. Finally, after staring at it in the driveway for a month, I settled on painting it white. A little sanding and spray paint brought it back to life! Now it's in the living room of my new apartment and it makes the perfect bar....on wheels! The little bunch of flowers were a Christmas present from Becky Vizard. They are Fortuny fabric flowers so they are never die! Below are a few more interesting, beautiful things from Bush Antiques. RITZ SLEEVE PLEASE

I walked down First Street with my friend Corbett to procure some beer after a long Saturday of work. There is this little corner store that I never had the nerve to venture into before. Corbett does a boot camp a few times a week so he can double as a well-dressed bodyguard. Anyway, we almost fell out when I saw the Ritz Cracker sleeves for sale with the snack items. I was busy snapping away pictures and pondering if I should purchase a lottery ticket when Corbett was all "let's get out of here..like now!" Our hair smelled like heavy Chinese food and incense before we got eyed by a scary man on a child's bike with a Pit Bull on a chain. That may be my last trip to the corner store...that is, unless I have back-up again.

THE CHRISTIAN VANCAMPEN COLLECTION

My dear, dear, talented friend and art hoarder Christian VanCampen is having an amazing sale of his fascinating collection of artwork. I've been helping Christian get ready for the sale tomorrow night and it's been so fun to hear the origins of each piece and why each selection is special to him. Christian has the most gentle nature and sees beauty in things that others may never notice. When you see the entire body of work he has selected it really is strange to think of any of it being separated. If you see anything you are interested in, let me know and I can give you the info, pricing etc. I can say that the least expensive piece is around $250 for a beginning point. Come by if you are in town and check it out. Unfortunately, Knock Knock- Christian's pet goat will not be in the side yard but we will be taking donations for his college fund. BLACK GLITTER AND FLUORESCENT PINK

I've been working with printmaker Meg Turner at Louisiana Artworks to produce a new screen print series. It's been really fun! The photograph is not doing the black glitter justice at all. It's really something! I had a good bit of experience in printmaking from college and graduate school but had never made these in particular. I did forget how labor intensive printmaking can be. Lots of prep time and plenty of room for my non-exacting nature to show. Thank goodness for the exacting nature of Meg. I think I'm gonna be keeping a pair of these for myself. Just thought I would give everyone a peek.

ANOTHER FABULOUS APP!

These are just a few of the fun pictures I took yesterday....not in 1970. These are from app for the iphone that I recently discovered. It's called Hipstamatic and operates like an old camera. The Hipstamatic was a real camera that has been revived and is catching on again. There are about five different lenses and flashes that you can use with two different types of film. The possibilities are endless. It'll cost you a dollar ninety-nine but I promise it's worth it!

3 DAYS OF BEING DOWN

I hurt my lower back trying to lift the porcelain lid off the back of my studio toilet that was covered in magazines. (So Glamorous!) That took about three days to heal. Then just when I was back on track and feeling great, I dropped my keys and all hell broke loose. It was a much worse injury than the first and left me with nothing to do but get in the bed. At first it was bothersome but then I got really used to it. I had several visitors that brought me necessities (I know-it was nice)....I've never really been stuck in bed when I didn't have a cold or something terrible. The spring weather was nice so I had all of the windows open and managed to eat and entire bag of Milano cookies. I'm not hoping that it happens again, I'm just saying laying in bed ain't so bad!

I REMEMBER WHEN JELLIES WERE COOL

They say that if you are old enough to wear a trend for the second time...you just shouldn't do it. Normally, I would agree but these were just too perfect. Clear jellies match with everything. I wore them to a baby shower with a purple linen dress and they were so cute. A little more sun on the winter legs wouldn't have hurt! Anyway, this is my fifth pair of Melissa flats. They are scented and have some special patent on their plastic infused with fabric. They run a little big so I'm a Bigfooted size 11 and I fit into the 10s. Try some!

DON'T SAY IT CAME FROM ME, BUT.....

This is the best GIN ever! That's all I have to say about that. Great for a warm weather drink.

Too funny, on the same day I wrote the Hendrick's post, I stopped to try and early dinner at A Mano --where they used the same gin in a cocktail. Of course I ordered it! I ordered two and now I want to re-create the Chinnoto at my house. The waitress said Amaro is easy to get from a specialty liquor store. Check out A Mano too--it's the new Adolfo Garcia restaurant on Tchoupitoulas in the CBD. I really enjoyed it.

LOOK OUT MARC JACOBS....

My cute friend Jonathan Wells came by (he's in the picture above) my studio for a visit last week. After talking for a bit, he confessed that he had bought, virtually a vault of women's clothing from an estate sale in Meridian, MS and had the bulk of the pieces in his car. Eileen and I were like..."you better bring that stuff inside...like now!" About an hour later we had dissected boxes upon boxes of the cutest dresses from the sixties that you have ever seen. It was like stepping back in time. The bulk of the collection was from a mother who saved she and her daughter's clothes in the attic for all of these years. I was partial to the polyester, it was really made to forgive back then and has a great stretch and thickness. Jonathan wanted to know which vintage clothing store might be the most interested as he had over 100 dresses. My mind was racing and I was still wearing some double-knit when the light bulb went off. I proposed that he let me call some interested girlfriends and give them a chance to buy some of the findings before taking them elsewhere. He was game and a party was born. Word spread fast and my friend Gogo took my advice and got there sharply at 3pm. She is very petite and managed to clean up on the smallest sizes! Being a vintage clothing wearer herself, she was on the case. Everyone managed to find something and the clothes just magically came back to like. My other friend Ashley Schumacher got lucky on quite a few dresses..it was as if they were made for her. (She's the blond in the top three pictures) It was over by six and the boxes were almost empty. Jonathan had a smile on his face, I had a blast, and those clothes are going to be out and about. He just emailed me last night that he has more and winter clothes too so I guess we'll be having another little get together soon!

Have you ever seen a better looking bunch of galoshes? The first three are by Chanel and the black crocs are by Jimmy Choo for Hunter. I have a pair of Tori Burch rain boots that are pretty smart but I don't think one just one pair of galoshes is enough for this subtropical climate. I managed to get out of there (Saks at Canal Place) without buying them but I'm sure thinking about it!

REAGAN HAYES

Reagan Hayes made a visit to New Orleans this fall and stopped by my studio. First of all, she and her husband are adorable and they have a fabulous new furniture line. We had a great visit and decided that we just had to have one of each others pieces. She mailed her fabric samples to me, complete with details, (Reagan is very organized as you can see!) a few months back. We discussed which painting of mine that she was responding to and decided upon a charcoal piece with gold oil pastel and touches of lavender. It turned out to be an amazing painting that I think managed to channel Reagan's sophistication and grace. I chose the Marion Daybed from her collection with nail heads, a white painted finish, and a putty colored linen velvet. It should get here pretty soon and I can't wait! I hope to post pictures of Reagan's daybed in my sun room and her painting in their posh San Fransisco pad! Check out the other pieces from Reagan's new line Youthful Elegance.

SO SWEET

Valorie, my friend, who has the very popular and fun blog The Visual Vamp had the best idea last week. She asked me if I would award the winner of a contest for her readers with a small painting. I was completely stunned by the outpouring of interest and support. We went through the vast number of entries and came up with a winner yesterday. It was tough! Each contestant sent in a photograph of the space in their house where they would place their winning piece. Valorie is going to display the winning image along with many of the entries.(I'll post the link here too when she finishes it) Be sure to check it out. I was so flattered and touched by all of the people that commented and wrote in with their homes. My close friend Logan Howcott, who is an amazingly talented stylist, is having a trunk show for designer Jodi Arnold. I have too many pieces to count of Alabama native Jodi's clothing when her brand was Mint. Each piece is so original and the fit is perfect! Now she is designing under her own name and the prices are a bit more affordable. Logan hand selected all of the must haves from Jodi's Spring collection just in time for some warmer weather. STICKING IT OUT

This is the adorable home of a my friend and client Kelly McCartney. She and her husband had massive flooding and damage to their Arabi home during Katrina. Instead of retreating..they did a complete reconstruction of their home and made it work even better for their growing family. Kelly has such a great eye and her home is peaceful, modern, and functional. She had artist Kaki Foley paint the walls of her baby boy's room in a chevron pattern. Isn't it adorable? I also have to say that she selected one of my favorite paintings for her family room. Parting with the piece to Kelley was much easier than I anticipated. I knew it was going to live in the perfect happy home.

I snapped these pictures months ago in Peter Patout's French Quarter home. Peter is an antiques, New Orleans, history, garden/plant aficionado and a wonderful friend. SANDY DAYDREAMS

It's official...I'm ill. Mardi Gras has come and gone and left me with a head and chest cold. So today, I came into the studio and spent the day on the internet. Pseudo-work. I'm tired of being cold, and the last two years I was basking in the tropical February sun. I'm sick and homesick for the careless days of lounging on the Mexican shore. I started browsing a few vacation rentals and I'll share my finds with you. Any recommendations would be great!

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (I've never traveled to Puerto Vallarta but I know it's a pretty short flight from New Orleans. I've been to Playa Del Carmen and Isla Mujeres and loved them both!)

Caye Caulker, Belize (I've spent time in Caye Caulker and it is amazingly quiet, laid-back, and beautiful. Very undeveloped and un-touristy)

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
(I've been dying to go San Miguel and spend a month painting. I know it's not a beach destination but I'm sure I could make do!)

ESTATE SALE INSANITY

Last Saturday, I made a one block detour to my studio and found the treasure hunt of the year. Sterling silver bowls, initialed flatware, beautiful linens, and glassware, all taunted me with their teensy price tags. I broke out into a sweat. I looked around and remembered my days of playing basketball and got my defense on. I made piles on the stairs by the cash register and tried to tell myself that all of it was necessary and totally justified. One van load later and these are the sale champion's spoils. I'm quite certain that the days watching my Mother working at the Junior League Nearly Nu Shop fully prepared me for moments like this.

I hoarded all of the overlooked bedcovers. My dogs love to jump on a fresh quilt and I've grown tired of washing heavy quilts every other day so these are perfect.
I think my friend Ashley Schumacher wanted to stab me when she saw this set of 12 rooster cocktail napkins I scored for $14. She needs to pipe down because I'm the one who brought her to the damn sale.

I bought tons and tons of the cranberry glasswear.

I bought my friend Rebecca Thomason a set of Linen dinner napkins embroidered with R's for half off of $35. You do the math...I stole them. I also picked up a set of sterling flatware for 60 bucks with monogrammed R's the second day. She's totally set!

LA PLAYA JUICE BAR

Finally... A place in Uptown to get fresh juices. This morning I ordered a beet, apple, and carrot combination that was truly delicious. It almost undid all of the damage from my gin and tonics the night before. This new breakfast, lunch, coffee, juice spot on the corner of Clio and Baronne and is too cute. Check it out if you are in the neighborhood. They also made a pretty mean tuna salad sandwich!

THE LULING MANSION

On Monday the whole city was pretty much in a Saints victory celebration , so I took an afternoon drive to Mid-City. One turn off of Esplanade before St. Louis Cemetery is the breathtaking Luling Mansion. The house makes it look as though time stood still and maybe it should be sitting in the European countryside, not right beside the racetrack. It was built in 1865 for Florence Luling by James Gallier, Jr. Now the property is broken up into small efficiency apartments. I was thinking about renting a room there for the summer and using it as a studio. How amazing would it be to step out onto the second story wraparound porch to make art? I'm making some inquiries. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I WAS A REALLY GOOD GIRL THIS YEAR

Well, let's say pretty good....but I was was lucky enough to receive an amazing plaster chandelier for Christmas from the multi-talented Julie Neill. Isn't it incredible?!! There was a gold pan light from the 70's already in place. That is so gone now! The white plaster totally makes the whole room. I am so grateful and excited that it will be with me forever now! I added the round rubber-tipped bulbs from Shades of Light on Josephine Street. Thank you again Julie.

THE REASON FOR MY TOO TIGHT PANTS

Well, since I have been packing on the lbs since Christmas and my blog has turned into posts about food lately, I might as well share this recipe. I must admit that I very loosely follow recipes and I feel very free in adding ingredients. That being said, I added bag of toasted coconut and four cups of toasted slivered almonds. I also used two bags of Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate Chips. Eat your heart out Martha! Forming the dough into round balls of equal size is the easiest way to prepare the cookies. When they are in the ball shape they cook to form the perfect cookie. It's also great because the extra dough balls can be frozen to be ready to cook anytime you have guests drop by. I bake the small impromtu batches in my trusty toaster oven. Last weekend I threw a few in the toaster and served them with a scoop of ice cream on top--it was awesome...no wonder I'm growing a muffintop.....

Cowboy Cookies

Makes about 5 dozen

3/4 cup pecans (3 ounces)
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed light-brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats (not instant or quick-cooking)
6 ounces semisweet chocolate, cut into 1/4-inch chunks
1/2 cup shredded unsweetened coconut
Vegetable-oil cooking spray

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread pecans in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Toast in oven, tossing occasionally, until darkened and fragrant, 10 to 13 minutes. Let cool, then coarsely chop. Into a bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder.
With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, cream butter and both sugars until pale and fluffy. Reduce speed to medium. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla.
With mixer on low speed, gradually add flour mixture, beating until just incorporated. Beat in oats, chocolate, pecans, and coconut until just combined. (Dough can be covered with plastic and refrigerated up to 3 days.)
Coat baking sheets with cooking spray; line with parchment, and spray parchment. Using a 1 1/2-inch ice-cream scoop or a tablespoon, drop dough onto prepared sheets, about 3 inches apart.
Bake, rotating sheets halfway through, until edges of cookies begin to brown, 16 to 18 minutes. Transfer sheets to wire racks to cool 5 minutes. Transfer cookies to racks to cool completely. Cookies can be stored up to 3 days at room temperature in airtight containers

My NEW Favorite

I've already finished this bottle. I'm onto bottle number two. Is it actually a problem if something tastes good on everything? I should just let the obsession continue...Tabasco Chipolte-it's really somethin' I discovered this new Tabasco when I found a turkey burger recipe listing it. Thanks Oprah!

Mar-a-Lago Turkey Burger

1/4 cup thinly sliced scallions
1/2 cup finely chopped celery
3 Granny Smith apples , peeled and diced
1/8 cup canola oil
4 pounds ground turkey breast
2 Tbsp. salt
1 Tbsp. black pepper
2 tsp. Tabasco® chipotle pepper sauce
1 lemon , juiced and grated zest
1/2 bunch parsley , finely chopped
1/4 cup Major Grey's Chutney , pureed

Directions:

Sauté the scallions, celery and apples in the canola oil until tender. Let cool.

Place the ground turkey in a large mixing bowl. Add sautéed items and the remaining ingredients. Shape into eight 8-ounce burgers. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

Season the turkey burgers with salt and pepper. Place on a preheated, lightly oiled grill. Grill each side for 7 minutes until meat is thoroughly cooked. Let sit for 5 minutes.

Serve with a side of Mar-a-Lago Pear Chutney and your favorite toasted bread, pita or hamburger roll.

P.S. I used apricot preserves instead of Major Grey's Chutney and it worked just the same...thankfully!

AWE INSPIRING LEMONs

Last week, I made a visit over to my friend Ashley Russell's house on Nashville Street. She gave me a tour of her beautiful new home and guest house. It was a little dark out back but in the top of about a twelve foot lemon tree were lemons the size of grapefruits! Ashley didn't have very much interest in them but I was determined to get on a Mardi Gras ladder with a basket for a child and clip some of the fruit. The operation was filled with intrigue and danger due to the rickety ladder and two inch thorns from the tree. Alas the fruit of my labor was well worth the risk! The lemons are superb! I used them to make another cocktail of my own creation. Or I think it's my own creation...
THE RICKETY LEMON
Anyone who can come up with a good name for it--let me know and I will post it below.
The drink is so simple and was a big hit my weekend guests. Take two shots of Gran Marnier and then add club soda, squeeze lemon on top, mix and top with a lemon for garnish. VOILA! Try it and you will NOT be disappointed!

ONLY AT THE WALMART on TCHOUPITOULAS

I just had to post this. Yes it's a weave, and yes, those are my feet. A trip to Walmart here in Uptown can be a bit of a walk on the wild side but today I got tangled up in a real hairy situation...... I made it out alive and even got a bottle of Cognac to make some French 75s for this very very chilly weekend!

French 75

The late Dr. Bernard Bienvenu, introduced this delightful cocktail at the French 75 Bar at Arnaud’s many years ago. Here’s to you, Bernard.

Makes 1 drink
1 1⁄2 ounces Cognac
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
1⁄4 teaspoon simple syrup
Champagne as needed
Twist of lemon

Place the Cognac, lemon juice and simple syrup in a shaker filled with ice and shake only long enough to chill. Pour into a frosted Champagne glass, top with Champagne and add a lemon twist. Serve immediately.

ST LOUIS CEMETERY #3

Living in a city where inspiration is everywhere is a big responsibility. Last Sunday was especially breathtaking and so I took a drive down Esplanade Avenue making some stops along the way. St Louis Cemetery was the first stop and is unbelievably magnificent. I'm thinking the shadows and the angles from the graves in these photographs will find their way into a painting very soon.

For WORSE and BETTER

Recently, I moved to a carriage house that is about a block and a half from my studio. Just the thought of being able to walk to work was a selling point but the space itself was pretty interesting too. There was wall to wall ancient carpet upstairs and downstairs. First off, I enlisted the help of my handy builder friend Susannah Rice to help me muscle the carpet out. After we removed the carpet, we saw brick floors downstairs and hardwood upstairs which was so exciting! The bricks were not all that old and had a not so interesting color and so we decided to paint it all white. The floors upstairs were in great condition so we just put a light coat of polyurethane on those. The downstairs living and dining room is mirrored so the white floors really played into the more modern feel. I still have a few more things to do but it's basically "done" and I had a great party there for New Year's Eve and it was a big hit! I'll post the kitchen soon!

PILLOWS, PAINTINGS, and JEWELS

Yesterday three girls pulled off a pretty good daytime party. Mary Kostmayer's Aunt Lydia opened her beautifully new renovated home for an afternoon soiree. Mary's pillows from her company Bache were on display as was the amazing jewelry from Susan Ripley of LeyLove (there she is above). I brought some framed works and some new small cubes.

Of course I couldn't not buy a pair of pillows from Mary! I have each unbleached linen pillow in a pair of bergeres in my living room which is a work in progress. I recently moved and did small renovations on a carriage house which I will be posting the before and after pictures soon.

These are some of her latest creations.

I would have been so rude not to get a pair of earrings from LeyLove too..! I love them so much I had to wear them today.

These are just a few of the small cubes that I made for the holidays. I sort of went wild and used glitter. It was beyond fun, I showed up to the party bedazzled in glitter. I was worried that the glitter idea might be a bit low-brow for the type of work that I do but it's so seductive. Martha Stewart makes amazing fine grade glitter in colors such as green agate and sepia. I could drop it directly into the lines paint and it would stay put. Then I could use a glue pen to outline and put a different color inside of that. I also found that I could hand mix my own colors from hers...I could go on and on.

As I stepped into the steamy steaminess that is October 30th, I was reminded that I hadn't posted pictures from another night of high humidity. Back in September, I had an art party that included the work of Los Angeles artist Tyler Ramsey. We cranked down the a/c and cranked up the music by DJ Minor Strachan and had one really sweaty fun night. I'm quite certain there was even perspiration on the windows as well as each partygoer. The photographs are compliments of Patrick Christovich.

CB2 to the RESCUE!

I have been dying to have an official desk for the back room of my studio for some time now. Finally, I decided on something from CB2. I ordered two of the Fresca consoles and put them together to form one almost five foot long desk. Because I ordered the Trig rolling filing cabinets from there too, I was certain that they would fit underneath. There are even hidden casters on the consoles themselves too. I really loved the option of using them as one desk or two tables later for a party or whatever. I am so happy sitting here typing away at my very new sleek desk. Some filing might actually get done too!

1022 GALLERY OPENING and PHOTOS by PATRICK CHRISTOVICH

Two Saturday nights ago, my good friends Hannah and Chris had their first opening at their new frame shop and gallery. My work, and the works of Tim Trapolin and Robert Moreland were all featured. It was a packed house! Each body of work was given a separate room and the space worked great for the flow of the crowd.

Here is the photographer/semi-professional golfer/realtor/and good friend Patrick Christovich. Patrick is readily available to photograph any parties you would like documented. I can't tell you how happy I have been to have his thoughtful and excellent photographs after many events. Usually, as a host, you are too busy to take pictures and you can't rely on your guest to do it either. Patrick is so nice to have a around and the best part is you have great party pictures to keep forever. I can't believe all of the art openings that from which I had no photos. Really, he would love to come photograph your party!

LOUISIANA ARTWORKS

PRINT LAB

Meet MEG TURNER printmatrix extraodinaire!

Meg just relocated from Providence, RI on her own to move to the city that stole her heart. She is running the Louisiana Artworks printing press. Have you ever seen such a beautiful perch to make prints?

I took so many printing classes that I came close to a double degree but I think I forgot everything! I'm going to take classes and refresh. Meg is going to post a class schedule soon on the Lousiana Artworks website and you will also be able to rent studio time.

I went down to the Artworks building to register for an workshop they are having this weekend and I felt so out of touch. First of all, the building is 93,000 square feet of artists studios, ceramics laboratory, glassblowing lab, printmaking studio, and metalsmithing studio. Whoa! It's all for artists and for anyone wanting to take a class. Their class schedules are just getting going but I will be posting some of their future events to get more of you involved.

I am really excited about a show that I have hanging at Isidore Newman School's Reynolds Gallery for the month of October. My work is sharing space with the work of ceramic sculptor Bradley Sabin. I was very excited to see our work together and the show totally surpassed my expectations. It looks amazing! I can thank Katheryn Scurlock for her amazing work in organizing both the Newman Exhibition and the show in Alys Beach. Stop in and view the show this month, it's also a beautiful gallery space.

NEILL and O'BRIEN

Lighting Designer Julie Neill and Interior Designer Shawn O'Brien had the brilliant idea to join forces and create an amazing line of furnishings. They have imagined fixtures, sconces, tables, chairs, curtains, and much more into a gorgeous reality. I have the pleasure of knowing both Shawn and Julie personally, and I love the way their new pieces reflect both their sense of fun and modernity.

The new shop Neill and O'Brien is located on Magazine Street. You really should stop in and see some of the details of the new pieces in person. I love their use of white!

The sconces are all jeweled and unbelievably beautiful. It's pretty hard to decide if you want to wear them or hang them on your wall...

Look at this beautiful jeweled detail on a silk slipcovered table. So innovative!

This is one of Julie's shadowboxes. Every single thing she puts into her boxes is purposeful and contributes to it's overall meaning. They are so fragile and beautiful.

I was lucky enough to receive one of Julie's special shadowboxes for my birthday this year and I get to see it everyday on my dresser. She showed me why she put each item into my box and why it was relevant to my life.

These are just a few of their awesome creations. You really must see them in person!

DRESSed FOR SUCCESS

Last night I attended an event at the home of Francine Ballard. The donations from the partygoers went to the Dress for Success organization. They aid in preparing women to enter the workforce through counseling and obtaining proper workplace attire.

Here is Francine modeling a fabulous Prada bag. Francine started her own handbag and accessory site called Designer Social that offers new and vintage bags. I recently bought this silver metal Calvin Klein box clutch from Francine and love it! Her site is so fun and who doesn't like buying designer discount!

Angelique Short brought clothing from her boutique Angelique and fabric started flying! All of the pieces she offered were under $200. My favorite were the AG jeans that act like leggings--she said they just can't keep them in stock.

REBECCA THOMASON

New New Orleanian

I recently had the pleasure of meeting the amazing Rebecca Thomason. I knew right away that she was a genius, that is because she decided to make New Orleans her new home! Rebecca just moved from Chicago where she worked for the auction house Leslie Hindman. And when I got a chance to look at some of the amazing catalogs that she put together for Leslie, I got even more excited. I asked her to help me put together an invitation for a show I am having in Houston at the home of Courtney Elias. She did an amazing job! Now that we know that Rebecca is both beautiful, talented, and brilliant, let's see if we can find her some more work. We want her to stay!

ALYS BEACH

Last weekend I visited Alys Beach near Seaside, Florida for an art event. My friend Katherine Scurlock organized to bring the work of four female New Orleans artists to Alys. Raine Bedsole, Karen LaBorde, Nicole Charbonnet, and my paintings were all featured. The amazing architecture and natural setting creates a magnificent backdrop to present modern art.

Each home is built using green construction techniques with environmental sustainability in mind. The use of walled courtyards are not only beautiful and private but also storm resistant.

One of the homes was filled with furniture from SOM (South of Market). I loved the minimalistic feeling and the industrial flair of the interior they create.

This is the entrance to the community pool. Isn't it amazing?

Most of the homes have a courtyard and a rooftop living area. It just makes sense to use all of your space, including the roof, for entertaining and for utilizing the unbelievable vistas.

This living room is separated from the rest of the house by a courtyard. I really liked that idea for guests. They could be in this fabulous living room with a fire and cocktails without disturbing anyone in the main house.

This is one of my paintings hanging in the courtyard of one of the homes. It's a small outdoor area but it shows you that small spaces can be so much more functional than wide expanses.

Wouldn't you love to come out to this porch off of your bedroom in the morning?

I would just love to just move in........If you are in the area, the show will be up for the entire month of October.

JUST ME, JOAN, and LEE

Still taking color inspiration from other artists work, I picked up a Taschen book on Abstract Expressionism that had been lying around my studio. The first painting above is inspired by the color and energy of the amazing Lee Krasner. Her piece is titled "Bald Eagle." I was also in a bit of a snit the day I chose her painting. I identified with the raw emotion and masculine energy in her piece. It let me cut loose. My painting is on a six foot piece of paper and I really got to channel my anger into a more productive form. It felt great and I think that energy was totally translated. The second piece is inspired from Joan Mitchell's "Hemlock." I loved the green, black and white, with touches of blue and very intense as well. My drawing is about 50" and has lots of pencil details and charcoal as the base. I video taped the process of making that piece and I will post the clip as soon as I can edit it down from 10 minutes to 2. I'm still figuring out how to use a fast forward program. I made both pieces in the same day. Now, if I could just be that creative every day, maybe I just need to get mad more often!

BUCCI INSPIRED

The work of Mississippi painter Andrew Bucci is fascinating to me. Yesterday, I was procrastinating by searching the internet for some color that would spark a bit of creativity. Andrew Bucci was on my mind because his work came up in a conversation the day before. I found that spark in one of his yellow paper pieces from 1964. I was not only fixated on the color of his piece but in his use of graphite pencil. I used graphite in mine to out line shapes on the top of the composition. I ended up creating a pair of yellow paintings that now I love almost as much as Andrew Bucci's. They kind of make you want to sing zip a dee doo dah! Not so bad after a week of rain everyday with more rain coming tomorrow.

ALLIANCE FRANCAISE

de la Nouvelle-Orleans

A few weeks ago, my friend E. Lee Jahncke Mead, told me she was working on a Showhouse for the Alliance Francaise on Jackson Avenue. Unfortunately, was ill-informed about the building and it's unique history. The Alliance Francaise has a twenty-five year history of teaching French to New Orleanians. Our chapter is part of an international organization that started in Paris in 1883 and is one of 60 teaching AF chapters in the the States. They not only teach French but offer programs that brings lecturers, music, and many interesting events to the city for both children and adults. If you stop by be sure to meet the very beautiful and kind Alexandra Stafford, the AF's Board President. Maybe, if you're lucky you might get to hear her speak in French!

I would begin with pictures of the building's bottom floor of but I'm still learning how to use this program, so here goes from the top down....

The AF enlisted the aid interior designer and fabulous epicurian Nadine Blake, who returned to New Orleans five years ago with her husband Simon Blake. Nadine's room was designed for a boy who draws inpiration from a young lad with "the curiosity of a young Charles Darwin, and the creative streak of a budding Picasso."

The French flag wall is just too perfect and I am in love with her John Robshaw bedding. If you need to pick up a set--swing by Nadine's shop in the French Quarter. Just, FYI John Robshaw dust ruffles will spoil you forever. They are made with three flat panels that can be neatly tucked in with out the aid of a second person to help lift a mattress. I'm not convinced I will ever have any other style of dust ruffle again.

The shelves were constructed of cardboard and are filled with interesting objects such as, National Geographic Magazines, toy cars, shells, and varying sized globes. I thought the mixture of personal objects in the young boy's room was fascinating.

The view above is from the second floor window of the building--you can even see our very own top of the Eiffel Tower! So very French!

Below is a photograph of the upstairs vestibule with before and after pictures of the stairway. Both spaces were beautifully transformed by decorative artist Sherry Haydel. I just love the double footstools and her great-looking burlap screen in the corner.

Next door to the young man's room is an equally gender friendly petite girl's room. Trudy Hurley of Green Parrot Design styled out this posh pad complete with a pink French Toile and monogrammed linens. I just love the handpainted floor!

This is the before picture of the beyond fabulous workroom by Grace Kaynor and Jennifer Flanders. Grace and Jennifer worked together in New York before Grace returned to her native New Orleans two years ago. She thought it would be fun to bring Jennifer in to collaborate on two rooms for the Showhouse. I worked in a fabric room for eight years and it NEVER looked this inviting. I love the idea board, the chandelier, the beautiful round worktable, and I could go on and on. Too bad Jennifer and Grace can't pop in anytime and use this as a design consultation room! And FYI the girls used Benjamin Moore 039 for the wall color and BM 1231 for the original trim color. Jennifer told me that she and Grace feel that this combination is a peek at the future in color-trending. I think it's way ahead of the curve too!

The modern art is so compatible with the classic French Antiques and silk shades.

This is a room by Roy Malone of Roy Malone Interiors. I didn't get to snap a before shot but he painted the entire room and turned it into a stylish reading escape ensconced with antique French daybed and desk. Roy better watch out, I'm thinking about sneaking away his handsome chocolate brown Bergere...

Hate your cabinets...? Let E. Lee come over and give your kitchen a complete makeover. She did an amazing job turning this below average kitchen into a space fit for creating a Provencale feast. I was thoroughly impressed with how she was able to use existing elements and painting techniques to fool even the keenest eye. She, actually, painted the trompe l'oeil tumbled stone squares onto linoleum. Then she painted blue French tiled accent squares in between each one. Hard to believe....

She researched creating her own plaster chandelier for the kitchen. The typical existing brass chandelier was beyond hideous. I think hers totally lightens up the entire room.

Look, she even repainted the front of the dishwasher. I was amazed at how she was able to make the small space both inviting and elegant.

This is another room by Grace Kaynor and Jennifer Flanders and is it ever stunning. This a before picture but it's already looking pretty good.

This is the only picture I took that you can see the chartruesish green ceiling, which inside sources told me was B Moore 371 and the walls were specifically mixed to match the silk curtains. I also love the contrast of the yellow door from the downstairs vestibule. I would have never thought to use the beautiful blue color she used for the paneled walls. It just looks so perfect in the space.

I'm totally in love with this room! Grace said that she used a Filiki or Turkish rug woven from a blend of angora, linen, and wool.

These small works really stand out on the painted walls. The idea of placing small works everywhere in an interior just looks so smart. Grace chose to use art that was all created by important Louisiana artists.

Cocktails anyone..?

She added smoked mirrors to the door that lined one side of the room. Genius!

This is sort of a "before" of a Ned Marshall interior on the first floor of the house. He painted the doors a sunny yellow and white. (On the other side of these doors are the smoked mirrors from the paneled room) The French console in the center is a stunning piece. Ned's apartment on Second street is featured in House Beautiful and is one of my favorites. I'm always trying to catch a peek in his windows when I'm walking my dogs.

I think this room is so elegant and liveable. The colors are alive and filled with energy.

I mean really! This is modern French style!

Ned, you really hit a home run here.

Oh, and not to forget the very talented antiques dealer Peter Patout. He designed and planted all of the plants in the beds for the front of the building. I've seen Peter's green thumb in action before and he knows more about plants than anyone I know. I'm sure it is going to grow into a beautiful garden. I hope you get a chance to stop by the Alliance Francais, if not for the Showhouse then at least for a French lesson or two.

TWIN TASTES

Part II

Just when you thought Jeannie's house couldn't be any cuter--you get to see Julie's house which is equally as wonderful!

Julie has a great entry on the side that leads all the way to her back courtyard. It's so very lush and shady.

Julie and Mark originally were going to place my painting in a covered area of their courtyard. But in moving it around they discovered that it should live with them in the kitchen. And what a kitchen!

Now they have two of my paintings! The small textured piece on the left is one of mine too. See Julie has the same knack for grouping artwork together and making interesting little arrangements. It's obviously a family trait.

Their home is a shotgun so the front door opens into this little hallway that includes the living room, dining room, and kitchen. I wish I would have taken a closer picture of her steel grey linen side chairs. They are so stylish.

I love this pair of framed Andrew Bucci's hanging on the brick fireplace.

This is my favorite picture of the whole post. The color in the painting just makes the room come alive! If you noticed Jeannie has the same coffee table by Jonathan Adler in green at her house. They also share the small footstool beanbags by Dosa from Pied Nu--Julie's is gold, Jeannie's is silver. Twins...!

I love this little extra room.

Mark and Julie's bedroom is so serene and filled with art. I didn't nose around too much in there because I feel like my bedroom is private and Julie was away when I took photos. They have been slowly adding to their art collection for years and they have such a great group of local artists. I wish more people took the time to give art for presents. It is something that you will keep forever. Most gifts end up just cluttering up tables. Art will clutter the walls in the best way.

TWIN TASTES

Part I

This summer I got reacquainted with a pair of twin sisters who each bought paintings from me. I had to stop by both Jeannie and Julie's houses to help decide if the pieces they chose were the best selections for each space. First I went to Jeannie and her husband Douglas's home (above). They live in an Uptown neighborhood where their house is the only mid-century modern for maybe miles. They performed a complete renovation with some amazing results.

Many of the distinctive touches like this gate are functional and look totally modern again now.

When you enter the front door from the metal gate, you walk into a sunken living room and a casual dining/lounge area. Upstairs is the dining room and another sitting area. Everything is so clean and functional. I go back and forth between wanting layers of rugs and a bohemian aesthetic to wanting all minimalistic modern in my imaginary house. I think Jeannie and Douglas have a nice balance of both.

They chose a painting that I did right after Katrina titled "Crowds." I think the yellow and black was a great choice for maximum impact in her living area

Even her bed is orderly--I wish I could be this organized!

Jeannie said they got their beautiful dining room table at a silent auction for charity and later was in a panic over if she had been too impulsive. I've made some impulse buys that way too but this table works in her space so perfectly. Too many cocktails and a pen at a silent auction have gotten me into big trouble more than once...

Her kitchen is a masterpiece! The cabinetry is from Ikea and I love the way they left the roofline and how it opens up the space.

They even has a faucet rigged up for filling big pots on the stovetop--how nice!

Both Julie and Jeannie really have a talent for arranging small groups of framed art and object and making them work together. Below is the most adorable screened porch directly off the kitchen and office above. I hope I get to go sit out there with Jeannie, Douglas, and their son Henry sometime!
